As the precursor to American Independence, the Battle of Long Island during the Revolutionary War was the first and largest battle fought by a newly declared nation. Although the battle was a licking to the American forces, it further fuelled the Americans resolve to continue fighting against the British. Archived images from this age depict oecumenical George Washington, his troops and equipment all crossing the Delaware River on boats. Another crossing, just as memorable is often overlooked. Our tidings will cover the events that led to the East River crossing in bare-assed York as either a retreat or a pretext to an attack. This segment will focus on explaining the reasons for the American forces defeat and the circumstances that lead to it.
After defeating the British in Boston, George Washington began to move all of his forces to Long Island New York, as this seemed to be the next location for a British attack, and because it held strategic importance for the British forces. New York was also a focal point for communication links between the northern and southern colonies. Shortly after Washingtons arrival in New York, preparations had to be made to fortify and keep going the city.



Washington commissioned his second in command, Major General Charles Lee, to begin building fortifications for the city. Numerous fortifications were erected in order to shelter the city. strongholds built in for this effort included Fort Stirling, Fort Putnam, Fort Greene, Fort Defiance, Fort Washington and Fort Box. In order to better prepare the city against the opposing forces, the forts were furnish with 36 individual cannon emplacements, most of which were 18 pounders, and a mounted battery of artillery pieces was also established at Governors Island. Although Washington was authorized 28,500 men by Congress, upon his arrival in New York, his forces were merely numbered at a mere 19,000.
