Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in 1797 and given the name Isabella Baum surrender. Between 1797 and her escape from slavery in 1827, Isabella was own by five different masters. After her owner promised to free her, and then fell through on his offer, Isabella escaped from slavery. She ulterior changed her name to Sojourner Truth and pledged to sojourn the land and address the truth of Gods phrase (Washington 15). In 1851 she traveled to Akron, Ohio, to attend a womens rights convention aimed at acquire Ohio to add more rights for women in its state constitution. Many Ohioans were against this goal, and many local men attended the convention just to comb speakers. Sojourner Truth delivered her famous Aint I a Woman? speech in this intense atmosphere. In her spontaneous lecture, Truth used her own physical and intellectual believability to make powerful emotional appeals and convincing logical claims. Her arguments redefined the word womanhood and made direct connections betwixt womens rights and the abolishment of slavery for an all-white audience. Her powerful speech was so successful that her oral communication are the main reason this convention is remembered today.
