Chapter 5 In this chapter I learned virtually Piaget and his supposition of cognitive learning. According to Piagets stages of cognitive development, a childs development open fire be broken down into four unique stages. sensorimotor gift (ages birth-2 years); this stage is marked by the babys king to visualize the world in terms of what he can do with an inclination. In this stage there is in addition six substages. Preoperational Stage (ages 2-6 years), in this stage the child starts to use images, words and actions that comport for manything else. Concrete Operational Stage (ages 7-12 years), marks the beginning of legitimate or operational thought. And Formal Operational (ages 12-15 years), which is when adolescents develop the ability to think about abstract concepts. Skills such as lucid thought, deductive reasoning, and systematic planning also emerge during this stage. In the second half of chapter 5 I learned about Vygotskys view of cognitive development. Vygotsky believed childrens thinking is bear upon by their knowledge of the social community. He described something know as the zone of proximal development (ZPD), which is the level at which the child can almost, but not fully, perform a task independently, but can do so with the help of someone more competent (pg. 168).



Another important lineament of Vygotskys theory is scaffolding. This is when an adult provides support for a child, and and then adjusts the amount of help they give depending on their progress. It is used as a support for construction of new material (the readiness/information to be learnt) and then removed once the construct is complete (the skill/information has been learnt). In this chapter I also read about some critics to Piagets theory. Before thus far getting to that fiber of the chapter I was already questioning some of the stages of Piagets development.
