Joseph Conrads short, but jam-packed, novella, smell of Darkness, is a literary ca-ca filled with imagery and symbolism. Kurtzs inborn mistress and his fiancée, although very unlike, both live in this world apart from the savagery of the men, even though they are actually right in the midst of it. Marlow even says, Theyâ€"the women, I mingyâ€"are out of itâ€"should be out of it. We must help them to stay in that beautiful world of their own, lest ours gets worse. (125). These two are perfect examples of how Conrad tries to separate women and make them these idealized figures in a very imperfect world.




The native woman represents the exotic beaut of the wild, embodying everything that the Africans were before the greedy whites came and attempted to colonize them. She is passionate, beautiful, savage and superb, agitated and magnificent (142). She represents Kurtzs wild and adventurous side, the part of him that is endlessly ready for an adventure and living life on the edge. She does not speak in the novella, which only adds to her allure and makes her even more than mysterious, just as the natives themselves are mystifying to Marlow and his men on their arrival to the inner station.
