The official verdict on Chinese President Hu Jintaos recently concluded visit to the United States is that it was a wide-ranging success for Mr. Hu and the Peoples Republic of china. Unfortunately, bid just about official verdicts pronounced by authoritarian regimes, that is only covetous thinking. In some important respects, it was embarrassing.
The official storyline goes something like this: America is a debt-ridden and fading giant that could not lead without China providing the cash that keeps it afloat. China is the 21st centurys inevitable new superpower. Americas acceding to Chinas long-standing request for an official carry visit by Mr. Hu to Washington, embellish with a 21-gun salute and a State Dinner at the White House, was an acknowledgement by the U.S. that China is now an impact partner amongst the worlds most powerful populations.
The occupation with the above depiction is that its main purpose is to flatter the mainland China and its leaders by telling them what they want to hear. It overlooks the more threatening reality that Chinas influence extends almost entirely to dollars and cents. In virtually all other areas of international relations, China is viewed as awkward and insecure.
Indeed, if China were a self-confident nation at ease with its place in the world, it would hardly be necessary for it to go hankering after a state visit in Washington or anywhere else.

Just as no sensible attempt would intentionally insult the bank that lends it the money it needs to die hard in business, likewise no sensible enterprise wants its better(p) customer to go bankrupt.
