This have by Kennedy dives deep into the events that led to World War I and shows the husbandry of the Ameri pile people during very tumultuous terms. Secrets of legal form militias are exposed along with desperate attempts by the establishment to control and manipulate the minds of Americans through the Sedition act and the entrance of citizen spies.
Kennedy is very descriptive about this war in customary and sets the tone for this entire scene in the prologue. The references made to Orwell, which can also be made today, tell how deeply mired the federal disposal was in the lives of everyday people. Many maintain questioned President Wilsons motives and reasoning but Kennedy chooses not to scoop out a side on Wilsons political motives and sticks to delivering the facts of the political science without bias. Kennedy did expose however, that the Wilson administration would do whatever it took to gain ordinary favor of going to war. In my opinion this book introduces the event of flamboyant government that has carried over into each presidents administration (republican or democrat) ever since, in particular the strategies (domestic or international), tactics, mindset and gardening of government that continues to embody the nation.
In this way Kennedys book is different than other World War I books because of the time spent showing how the war was affecting the people and the government at home.
Kenney spends some time in chapter 3 discussing the parameters of the muster and how it evolved over time. I found this very interesting presumption how it was presented to the men being drafted, almost like a investment company running an ad for their next big sale. This false common sense of patriotism and mind manipulation was a low billet for this country and the American people.
